Ta’Nisha Jackson Background

Date of Birth: 12 April 1930

Place of Birth: Washington Hospital Center, District of Columbia

Mother: Harriet Jackson

Father: Murray Jackson

Ta’Nisha’s parents are Harriet and Murray Jackson, married in 1916 at the ages of 20 and 24 respectively. Harriet worked as a domestic servant in the homes of two congressmen and one senator (never of any rank). Murray was occupied as a Janitor at the US Capital Power Plant from 1914-1932. Harriet and Murray Jackson report living in a now-demolished alley community between 9th and 10th and L and M streets in SE. Tax records show Mrs. Jackson continued residence there until 1934. Mr. Jackson, however, disappeared from the tax records in 1932. Court papers from Ta’Nisha’s arrests indicate he left before she was two to look for work in Baltimore. No tax records for him can be found there. There is no indication Ta’Nisha ever knew her father. We have stopped looking for him.

In 1934, First Lady Wilson helped push a bill through Congress that demolished the Alley community where Harriet Jackson lived, but opened up the Ellen Wilson Dwellings. Harriet applied for, and received an apartment at 6th and G. She continued to live there until 1956, when she was moved to a Government-owned nursing home. She passed away on 13 May 1960.

From 1936 to 1941 Ta’nisha was enrolled in Amidon-Bowen Elementary School (Grade 5). Then she was enrolled in Jefferson Middle School from 1941-1944. She then enrolled into Dunbar High School, but never graduated. At 16, she dropped out. Police records indicate the following known associates:

  • Prostitutes
    • Sarah Ransom
    • Iris Hopkins
    • Mary Walding
    • JoAnne Holley
    • Pauline Dial
    • Shirley Etherton
    • Gertrude Sims

    • Thomas Hatfield “McCoy”
  • High School
    • Florine Sorenson / Hair Dresser / 624 G Street SE / Age 19
    • Wynette Harris / Store Clerk, Fort McNair Shoppette / 80 Carrolsburg Place SW / Age 18
    • Essie Cooper / Stripper, “The Nexus Gold Club” / 900 1st St SE / Age 18
    • Eunice Roach / Student / Dunbar High School

Ta’Nisha is the last of five children and the only girl. Her older two brothers (Murray, 29 and John, 32) escaped service in the war. Murray has since left DC and now lives in Richmond with his wife and three kids. There is no evidence Ta’Nisha sees him on a regular basis. John lived with his mother until she became too ill to take care of. He has a wife (Nicole) and a daughter (Harriet). Ta’Nisha’s other two brother both served in WWII. Joseph was 20 when he killed on 12 January 1944 at Monte Cassino. Nathaniel was killed 7 March 1945 in the Philippines.

We believe that these individuals are part of the Carrolsburg Crew; a gang of youths known to frequent this area. Little is known of the gang; other than it’s name.

Mary Tituba

Date of Birth: 12 April 1923
Race: Negroid
Height: 5′ 9″
Weight: 102#
Identifying Marks: None

Mary is also a prostitute. She was left at the Washington [D.C.] City Orphan Asylum (Hillcrest Children’s Center) as a newborn and raised there. At 16 (1939), she was asked to leave because of her behavior. She enjoyed taunting others and convincing them to participate in cruel pranks on other children. In 39 her taunts convinced one twelve year-old girl to sleep with a much older man. The woman in charge, Margaret Weissman, discovered this when the now, 13 year old girl started to show her pregnancy. During the investigation, Mrs. Weissman discovered that Gertrude had used several other children like this and had performed various similar services herself. Since that time, Gertrude had been arrested for prostitution several times.

According to court transcripts, her first employer was a George Arneman. No record can be found of how and why she changes employers.

After the τ event, she continued to live the life of a prostitute from the same address until the 1968; the last date in the police record. Unfortunately, Gertrude’s name never appears on the list. The name on the list from 1945-1980 is Regina Emerson. No record of Regina Emerson can be found in our search.

Housing Projects, Architecture and the Deceptive Use of HOPE

by Simon Fitzgerald HONR. 288I Prof. Doug Lewis Nov. 27, 2001

This article gives a feeling of the housing development, but contains no game-necessary information. It is for background feel only

In the first half of the twentieth century, the influx of poor and working-class immigrants, especially the descendents of freed slaves from the South, into Washington D.C caused a severe housing shortage and the construction of substandard dwellings reminiscent of shanty-towns. “Nearly 9000 houses (were) without indoor toilet facilities. Over 4000 did not have indoor running water. More than 10,000 families {had to) use candles or oil lamps…. (As of 1938, the) population (had) increased 30% in the (previous) 10 years (and) new dwellings for only half of these newcomers (had) been provided.” These conditions “were dramatically manifested in (what were called) Alley Dwellings,” housing built on alleys within blocks that did not face any major streets (fig. 1).(1) It is in this time that the nation’s capitol began the construction of public housing projects.
