Chatsworth, NJ Redux

Case File: 003
Philadelphia, PA
29 June 1976

We are in the middle of our new plan. Art and Liuhua had three main jobs early on.

  1. Set up the DC trip (tour guide, hotel, transportation, etc.)
  2. Award the prize in Chatsworth
  3. Rent a large house and one nice car, and buy two inconspicuous cars in Philly.

They had no firm dates in this plan, and by the 25th they were back. The Moon’s won the bicentennial trip to the Capitol. All five in the family went along without any issue. I arrived with Dr. Yaqub and Jessica on the 20th. During the next 7 days we set up Jessica in a job. She’s a repair technician for Xerox. Art is the Regional Sales Manager and has booked a trip to New York to show her the ropes. He has the region from Pennsylvania and New Jersey to Maine. He also has an itinerary:

  1. 27 June Drive to NYC and check-in
  2. 28 June – 5 July In New York City
  3. 5 July Drive to Boston Check-in
  4. 6 July – 9 July in Boston
  5. 10 July Drive to Schenectady
  6. 11 July – 17 July Schenectady
  7. 18 July Drive to Harrisburg
  8. 19 July – 22 July Harrisburg
  9. 23 July return to Philadelphia

Jessica and Art left on their Northeast tour two days ago and are staying in the Sheraton Broadway. Before Jessica left, she rigged up the phone in Philadelphia to automatically forward all phones calls to the phone outside of the Holly Motel. Tomorrow, I meet Butler to hire him to check them out. Now, I just need to figure out when I hire him. The plan is for him to go to NYC to follow my wife, Jessica. She’s supposed to be on a business trip, but he suspects she’s cheating on him. It’s a three-week trip, so Butler may need to away for some time. I will expect updates at the end of each week and a final debrief the day after she returns on the July 24. Once Butler is gone, Liuhua, Dr. Yaqub and I can retire to Chatsworth to watch the Tau and the girls. Hopefully Elizabeth will be out of town, but if she’s not, we’ll take action to prevent her going to the Pagan party. She should be leaving Chatsworth on 2 July where they’ll be staying at the Watergate. Art planned a dinner on the Dandy out of Alexandria. The ship leaves at 7:00 pm, so they need to be checked in by 3:00 pm.
Hopefully, all will go smoothly and we’ll all return to 2033 intact.

Team Discussion

A. Why did the NJ state cop run our licenses but not call us on the fact that they’re fake?

Art:    Possibly, the cop wasn’t a real cop. Perhaps a friend of Butler’s. Perhaps a a friend of Butler’s acting in a non-official capacity.

Liuhua:    What would be someone’s motives for identifying a fake, but not calling them on it?

Jessica:    He was alone, calling us on it might have been risky for him.

Dr. Yaqub:    Why not call in backup then?

Liuhua:     Maybe knowing who we were and our intentions was more important?

Art:     So, what are the options:

Pagans: Presumably, they don’t know about us at this point.  Unless, they are following Butler as well. In which case, they’re finding out the players. Taking us off the street won’t necessarily help them. This seems advanced for Pagans.??

Mob: Might be uncertain about our motives. Another Mob family trailing Butler to take him out? No reason to interfere with us for the moment. Feds? Doubtful they’d be following Butler without Butler knowing about it.??

Butler: He’s alone with a friend outside. There’s two cars of us with at least 4 in one car. 2 against 8 is bad. Especially with up to 4 with unknown whereabouts.??

NY State Police: No reason to let us go. Little reason to get involved in the first place. I think we can rule out that this policeman was only acting in an occiail capacity.??

Conclusion: Most likely information gathering…but for whom?

Frank: Best bet is it was Butler calling for back-up, since we know now that he was on to us well before the restaurant. Maybe the only thing he was checking was for known Pagan or Mob connection. He must have been satisfied that we weren’t a threat, since he didn’t have us arrested for the fake licenses, an easy way to remove us, had they wanted to.

b. Why did DeLuca come here? There’s no linkable tie between him and the Pagans or anyone else in Chatsworth.

Jessica:    He had to go somewhere.

Liuhua:    You’re assuming he’s in Chatsworth. We’ve never had any confirmation of that.

Art:    You’re right. All right, let’s go under the assumption he isn’t and may never have been in Chatsworth. It makes sense if this was a trap for Butler. The only reason Butler’s here is he got a tip. Next thing you know Butler’s ambushed. That would mean the teenage girl was a lure. A sick one, but a lure nonetheless. So why do the Pagan’s want to off Butler?

{ crickets }

Frank: Agree that it’s most likely a set-up to get Butler. We don’t know why the Pagans want to eliminate Butler, but another good question is why the elaborate ruse to get him here rather than just jumping him on the street or taking him out during his long hospital stay?

c. Why did the teenage girls come to the party? Who are they?

See B.

Frank: Maybe the cooperative one wants to be a Pagan woman/groupie/whatever. She brings her friend as the price of admission?

d. Any chance the NY cop in a. is one of the 2 who reported DeLuca is present in Chatsworth?

In light of B, that’s a very real possibility. Maybe we need much, much more on the cop?

Frank: It would be nice to know, but we’ll probably never get an answer to this with research, and short of coming back early enough to eavesdrop on that phone call, I’m not sure we’ll ever know for sure.

2a. Probable connection between one of the girls and Pagans.

Dr. Yaqub:    If she’s into a hard core party scene there’s a chance she met one at a party. Some women are drawn to that type of personality. Obviously she was one of them. That might be enough.

Art:    If we go back in late May, we’d have time to research her and check out her friends.

Jessica:    Ummm …. a bunch of men asking questions about a 16 year old is bound to raise some eyebrows. We’d need to have a darn good reason.
Liuhua:    Perhaps a Socialogy study from Princeton? We give a survey to all High Schoolers about their social conenctions. We give her a marked one so we know what her answers are.

Art:    That could work. Perhaps, we pick ten or so “at random” for more in depth interviews.

Frank: Seems like overkill, even if it does turn out that the research has identified the right girls. All we really need to do is keep them from getting to the party. Let ‘em “win” some concert tickets or a shopping spree or a trip, something better for a couple of teenage girls to do than go to a biker gathering.

2b. Very tenuous potential link to NJ State Policeman.

See discussion above.

c. Butler stumbled into something big. It doesn’t make sense that Pagans would move so quickly to gather so many of their “best and brightest” in such a short time in response to being watched. This was something special.

Art:    It’s clear they were aware of Butler (and us?). It seems an odd reaction for someone just watching them. Chasing him off would probably have been tried first. That’s what they did with Frank, but they didn’t try that with Butler. In fact, they never made any indication they were aware of Butler. If Butler stumbled onto something it wasn’t that night. Perhaps the night before, but what could he have seen or heard from the windows? If they knew he was there they gave no indication. No, they waited until they had a good number of men before springing a trap that was set up before Butler was in place. Butler was watching since 8pm or so and the ambush was already set. 3 hours later, when the girls arrived it was sprung.  Sometime between 2 and 8, 14 Pagans arrived. Where’d they come from? Philly, Trenton, New York, Delaware? All an hour or more away. This means they started this course of action earlier than 7pm that night.??

Perhaps, Frank, our visit tipped their hand into action and they set this up around 3pm? Maybe Butler wasn’t trapped, maybe we were? The Tau event occurred two nights later. We interfered. Maybe they knew we were federal? Maybe they spotted us earlier? Was the cop working for the Pagans, reporting on any folks coming in???

If they were having a multi-group conclave, there might me leaders, sergeants-at-arms, and cookers here. Maybe it’s not that Butler stumbled onto something maybe it was us? They reacted in a way to trap us?

Liuhua:    You’re forgetting Butler had a tip DeLuca was in here and the people at the diner said they saw him with a Pagan dating Lippensheld. He could have driven off to Trenton. Butler only stopped here to look for the next step on DeLuca’s trail. He knew the Pagans wouldn’t answer him so he decided to watch and wait.

Jessica:    Maybe, DeLuca’s behind all this. He knows he’ll have a tail. He calls the tip in himself and leaves a trail to the Pagans house. He promises them fun with some girls and a good beating to an ex-cop with a thing against Bikers. Thus the trap was set long before the tip was ever made.

Art:    By the time anyone realized Butler was missing, DeLuca’s trail would be more than a week old. By the time a new bailbondsman would be found, the witness would be killed and DeLuca could surface again. Hmm … It’s a good plan.

Frank: That sounds like a very realistic scenario, and the best one I’ve heard so far.

d. We either changed the course of events or the event we witnessed was only a prelude to the actual Tau event on 04 July. If actual Tau event is still on sched for 04 July, it is likely related to either Butler or the girl on the table, or both.

Dr. Yaqub:    I talked to our physicists and their not much help. In their opinion, the death of Bill (she pauses, and takes some time to catch her breath) that…impact to the Tau is so great, it overwhelms the others. It’s not clear if we have one, two, three, or even more Tau events connected with the weekend. It’s havoc over there. All sorts of ideas and thoughts are being thrown around and none of them have any clue what they’re doing. Hard sciences have no answers or directions here.??

Whatever the old timeline was is irrelevant. What is relevant is that we know there are two primary events to overcome:?
1) Save Bill?
2) Save the girl??

We presume there’s a third; save Mr. Butler. However, we don’t know if that’s still on the table or not. In fact, we have never known that.

Frank: Ok, rule number one – we all stop thinking and talking about Bill as if he’s dead. He’s only dead in another timeline that’s never going to happen. We’re all dead in other timelines that aren’t going to happen. In some we never lived through childbirth, in others we were killed in car crashes or fell down steps or had a shiv stuck through our ribs in prison. Doesn’t matter. Those alternate time lies aren’t real – and it’s not real that Bills dead either.

So what do we do? The way I see it, we have four possible targets:

A) Butler himself – we stop him from going to Chatsworth. Easiest way to do that, since we’re now on him like glue from around 11:30 on July 1, is to go back before July 1 and hire him away for an alternate job. However, since we don’t know for sure whether he’s linked to ALL possible Tau events in Chatsworth, we also have to go there.

B) DeLuca – we also stop him from going to Chatsworth. We find him as he leaves prison on June 28, grab him, take him to Atlantic City, and sit on him until the 20th or 21st, when we give the police an anonymous tip about where to find him.

C) The girls – we keep them from going to the party. An offer of fun and prizes should take care of that. We just have to make the offer good enough that they can’t refuse. Of course, the Pagans can always find other bait, so for this particular tack to be effective, we’ll have to get them out of the way last minute, so the trap can’t be reset in time.

D) The Pagans – we haven’t identified enough of them to circumvent them all, and doubt it would be possible anyway. I think the only approach here is to prevent the event itself. One option is another anonymous tip to the police to get them to come break the party up. Problem is that might lead to bloodshed and even death on one or both sides that shouldn’t happen. Another is to go with our original plan of letting things play out until just before things go awry. That’s a tough bit of timing. Too soon and we miss our rescue window. Too late and, well, we’ll have to try again.

I propose a multiple approach. We probably can’t do anything about the Pagans themselves, but we can certainly do something about the others.

  1. We could start with the girls. It wont take long to make some travel arrangements and deliver the tickets to make sure they’re not around.
  2. We grab DeLuca and stow him someplace.
  3. We make contact with Butler and hire him away. That takes care of three of the four essential pieces for the current scenario.

Thoughts?

Art: Elizabeth has an invite to a Biker Party and probably already knows one of the bikers. What would be more interesting to a biker wannabe than a biker party. It would be a long shot to find a concert on that night that she likes enough to ditch the biker party. Especially if she were told or ordered to come and bring a friend. If there was longer travel, parents would normally be notified. It’s probably easiest to take them out on the way to the party. We know where they end up and there’s not that many ways they can get there. A Police roadblock would do the trick.

Jessica: How do we grab DeLuca? The last sighting was at court and he probably walked out with his lawyers and bodyguards. Perhaps if we follow him we can get him alone.

Liuhua: If we did that, then we could ensure Butler didn’t go to Chatsworth at all. Then the only one to protect is the girl.

Dr. Yaqub: Which brings us back to the girls. How do we keep them from going to the party?

The Military calls it FUBAR

Case File: 003
Philadelphia, PA
02 July 1976 Supplemental

After discussing all options and consulting with the team, I’ve decided that sending Butler out of town could potentially cause a Tau event and I am not willing to risk that. By the time we finished the discussion it was 7:00 PM. We topped off the cars (although they were close to topped off to begin with), grabbed some snacks and coffee for the wait. Bill, as per last night, left with Butler. As with the night before, he drove down the railroad access road and parked his motorcycle in the woods. Instead of approaching from the NorthEast, he instead approached from the South. To Bill’s question, he didn’t want them to hear noises from the same direction.

That wasn’t an issue. We could hear the party from where we were. There is no way they’d be able to hear either man in the woods. Butler and Bill took up a station on the back shed side of the yard. They had a good view of the pool and the deck. We were surprised when we saw the number of bikers present. Previously, we thought, there were 3. Now that number had grown to ten. They must have come in while we were planning our moves or at supper. Butler didn’t seem fazed by the number. Afterall, he wasn’t here to mess with them–only confirm that DeLuca was there. He’d stay in the bushes until late at night. That was his plan.

A little after 10:30pm, Butler and Bill heard and saw an early 1970 Toyota Corola pull up in the driveway. Bill can see long blonde hair and fair features in the car. “Women, ” he thinks. Ten minutes later, he finds his vision was on. However, he age estimation was off. Indeed, two young women exit the house and enter the deck with Mug Shot. “As my Grandpap would say, ” thinks Bill, ” Don’t that put pepper in the Gumbo! They can’t be a day over 16! What in heaven’s name are they doing here!”.

It didn’t take long for the bikers to become interested. Even from the distance, Bill saw one was fine with the attention, but the other most definitely wasn’t. After a few gropes and comments from the red haired biker, the one not enjoying the attention asks the other one to leave. The other girl cajoles her into staying with the support of the bikers, but she wants none of it and breaks Red’s grasp and starts for the steps, where she’s met by the Blonde Haired biker they’ve seen before. As she tried to run past, he grabbed her, while blondie grabbed her legs.

They carried her down the stairs into the yard and a third lifted her shirt. That’s when Mug Shot told them to go into the shed. At this point the τ had dropped to orange and was still going down. We all reacted. Bill and Butler decided to go into the shed to rescue her form the three bikers. I prepared to drive in and rescue the rescuers–or at least create a distraction. As it turns out things went from bad to worse. Inside the shed, waiting for them, were eleven more bikers. 14 to 2 is never good odds, even if you havea shotgun with rubber bullets and tear gas. Bill think he took out two with the shot gun and Butler took down two with his fists. However, Bill’s last shot missed it’s mark as he fired wildly. Someone took him out then. We’re not sure if he’s alive or dead at this point. Neither are we sure about Butler.

At this point, I made a call to abort the operation. Parking the vehicles, we immediately jumped back to 2033.

Fireworks Salesmen

Case File: 003
Philadelphia, PA
02 July 1976

Last night, Bill made great strides in getting Butler’s confidence. They agreed on a two-part plan: recon the house tonight and today Art and I went door to door selling assortments of fireworks. (Jessica was constructing the tracking devices and Bill stayed close to Butler). The second part of this stems from our belief that we ought to find DeLuca before Butler finds him. We’ve toyed with the idea of taking him into custody from Butler, but haven’t reached a conclusion on what to do once we find him. Liuhua and Dr. Yaqub acted as runners, food gatherers, and information locators for us.

The results of the first of our efforts was inconclusive. We did get a good look at the house and various views. However, we found no evidence that DeLuca is still here.

At 2:26PM, Art and I knocked on the Lippnsheld’s door and were greeted by “Mug Shot” himself. “Mug Shot” is an intimidating guy, even more intimidating in his wife beater T-shirt. I’ve met guys like that in prison and they’re not ones to mess around with. I may have him by a few inches, but he has me around the chest and arms. The man has obviously spent a lot of time at the gym. His hair is a curly, greasy mess of long black hair coming to his shoulders. His face a craggly mess that indicates too an acne-scarred teen life and perhaps too many fist fights. His nose has been broken at least twice. Underneath his bent nose is a full beard and mustache. The plan was working fairly well. He didn’t let me in, nor did he tell me how many people were in the house. However, he was going to write down names and tell me when to come back later. He was, until he was interrupted. Another large man, this one in the 6′ range (it’s hard to judge looking up the stairs), with a rather large belly, long dark red hair pulled back into a ponytail, full mustache and beard at least 5 to 6 inches long appeared and threw me out. I hoofed it right on out of there. Heading back to the Motel, I called off the exercise. It was 3:12 at that point.

Bill told Butler what he found out and Butler wasn’t surprised by the failure. Pagans are notoriously tight lipped when it comes to who there members are, but it was worth a try. Bill asked him his next move and was told that he’d watch the Pagan house tonight from 9 until they go to bed plus three hours and see if he can see Victor.

When Bill came back, we talked about our options. Over the next two hours these possible strategies and came up agreeing to the following options:

Option 1: Receiving an Award This doesn’t have to be a very big award. Maybe he’s the 1,000,000th customer at a certain store or something like that. Dr. Yaqub suggested that in Glasgow they had a “Drink every Beer” type of thing in one of the college bars. They’d post a picture, the date, and time. Maybe we do something similar with a note that he’s headed to Atlantic City for the weekend? I’m thinking maybe we can use this with a “man on the street” interview that includes the question, what are you doing for the 4th, and DeLuca’s answer is, “I’ll be in Atlantic City” or Vegas or someplace.

Option 2: An Overheard Conversation Suggested by Art, this is an overheard conversation between someone who “saw” him leaving? Since we have to assume Butler knows who the group is, we may have to pay someone to have this conversation. I think we could pull that off.

I gelled these two options together for this plan:

We put together a quick on the street interview that makes it clear DeLuca’s plans for the 4th include a road trip to Atlantic City that a player to be named later can get to first to start a month-long “bread crumb trail”. In case he doesn’t bite on the interview, we stage the overheard conversation. I even have a good way to do the conversation. Rather than pay a local to do it for us, we script something ourselves. Butler may know what we look like, but he probably doesn’t know our voices (Other than Bill’s) — at least not well enough to recognize them over the airwaves, which always distorts voices a little. We pretend that we bug someplace (need another good story here) and have Butler help us monitor. At some point in his shift, he hears the conversation. Of course, it’s really a conversation by one of us simply sitting and reading a script. A little more complicated than paying a couple locals to have a fake conversation, but more secure, and we can control the outcome better. One little worry is how to get Butler to monitor the airwaves. Maybe we tell him we like his style and think he could fit in well with the NSA. We’re thinking of hiring him and want to give him a “road test”. Will he buy it? I guess if he doesn’t we can always go back to having the locals do it. We’ll discuss this over supper.

PS. The good news of the day is that Jessica has finished two tracking devices with a range of 1/2 mile. It is basically a transmitter sending off a beacon. We receive it on a screen that shows direction. It doesn’t have a map, just direction and perceived distance. The distance can be wrong based on dampening surfaces between us (like a concrete wall!).

Arrival

Case File: 003
Philadelphia, PA
01 July 1976

In three days the country will be in the throes of one of the countries biggest celebrations: 200 years of being a nation. I’m going to miss it. Art and Liuhua have been here since June 15 securing two nondescript cars, bank accounts, and a lay of the land. They had a nice portfolio of information prepared for us and it didn’t take long to get down to business.  The first task was to set up in Marsala’s Italian Restaurant, where  Butler was last seen at and wait for him to show. His girlfriend told the police they met around 11:00. We were there at 10:30.

He arrived, on schedule, and I must say I had a eerie feeling watching history as it went through the motions. he had a lovely lunch with Peggy, but was interrupted by a phone call around 11:30. The voice on the other end told him they had seen DeLuca in a diner in New Jersey. Bingo! That’s our address. I’m confident the incident is related to Butler. Half the team left for the cars preparing for him to pull out. The rest of us stayed back. After another fifteen minutes, Butler left on his motorcycle and headed toward NJ-70 out of PA. With the exception of a brief stop to fill up his gas tank in Marleton, he headed directly to Chatsworth.

There, at First and Main, he parked and entered the Buzby’s General Store and Diner. After having a cup of coffee and, presumably finding out where DeLuca may have gone, he came back out looked around and headed back down 70 East. Turning down 206, he stopped at the Red Lion Diner. I sent Arthur and Liuhua to find a hotel and they headed back down to the road to the Red Lion Inn. Unfortunately, the Red Lion Inn isn’t an Inn. It’s a restaurant. They left to find the Holly Motel–just down the street. Before they could, however, we had the first of several surprises today. I had sent Jessica into the Red Lion to watch Butler and get us some food. I chose Jessica, because Butler had not seen her in the diner in Philadelphia. In any case, we were visited by one of New Jersey’s State Police. I’m not certain why he was there, perhaps someone was spooked by us sitting in the car for a long time. In any case, he collected our driver’s licenses and went back to the car–presumably to check up on us. As this was happening, Butler left the Diner with Jessica in tow. We called in Art to follow Butler, while the cop detained us.

Art followed him to the Holly Motel and checked in with Liuhua with two rooms. When we arrived we got another. With three rooms, one of them next to Butler’s, we decided to wait and see where he went next. We had to wait about 45 minutes before he made his move and it appeared that move was to inspect the Lippenshield place. While Art got busy bugging his hotel room, Bill and Jessica followed Butler in the clsoe vehicle, while I and Dr. Yaqub followed.

Here was our second surprise. Instead of going past the Lippenshield place, he turned into a driveway before the Lippenshield place. Liuhua ran the address, but found nothing significant. Jessica and Bill parked and decided to follow him through the woods. However, they found him waiting for them. In the ensuing conversation, Bill managed to get Butler to agree Bill could work with him. I’m not certain, he believes our story being NSA agents, but he’s at least playing along. Butler, however, posed a test for Bill. Butler was going to the end of the block, park the bike and sneak through the woods to recon the Lippenshield place. Bill says he walked as quietly as he could, just like back in the war. Surprisingly, Butler was even quieter than Bill was, but they circled the place and came back without anyone knowing they were there.

The recon didn’t show much. There’s two bikes outside–both Harley’s. It’s a good bet “Mug Shot” is there and at least one more Pagan; perhaps two. No sign of a car, but the garage door was closed. Butler’s plan is to go back at night, late night, and check things out again. He’ll call it a day and return at 11:00 pm. If DeLuca’s not there, then he has no leads and will have to figure out how to talk to them. That will be tomorrow’s task, however.

While they were gone, I congratulated Art and Liuhua on the good job getting into the New Jersey State Police computers to validate our forged driver’s licenses. They told me they hadn’t done that. They thought we decided not to take the risk. My stomach sank and I’m confused. The Cop apparently called in the licenses and perhaps even the car. Certainly, it wasn’t registered as stolen, yet there was no follow up questions. I’m missing something here and not quite sure what.
