Returning to 1977

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ
4 March 1977, 8:35am

Art and Bill entered Dr. Robard’s apartment searching for Robard’s stash. I suggested some common places junkie’s hide their stuff and, sure enough, Bill found a pink crystalline substance and a pipe. Giving it a quick test, he proclaimed it was methamphetamine. We put it back and convened in a new hotel to talk things over. We talked about a lot of different options, but left it for the night with the following plan:

Confront the supervisor and pay him to make sure Robard keeps his job but gets professional help. He gets the cash when Robard completes the treatment program. We don’t even talk to Robard about it. Leave all the communication between Robard and his boss.

Butler Intervew 2

Frank: Look, Mr. Butler, you hit us with some truly astounding facts this afternoon. You say Sterling’s a demon, and I’ve seen nothing to dispute that. You say you’re opposed to him, so I’m guessing that means you’re an angel, and we’ve gotten mixed up with some sort of good vs. evil conflict, right?

Gerry: What have you gotten yourself mixed up in? Well, yes, I guess you have. Good, Evil…it all sounds so simple. On one hand it is. At least for beings like myself and Sterling, It is simple. Right versus wrong. Chose your language and the concept is there.

Frank: Good and evil, right and wrong. The terminology isn’t that important. What *is* important is that I frankly don’t know who I can trust here. Sterling’s obviously done some bad things, but maybe those are simply his failures. Maybe he’s actually a good guy, testing those on the fence. Maybe his successes far outweigh his failures. Stranger things have happened. On the other hand, you don’t come across as all that pearly white either. True, you went to great lengths to rescue that young lady in ((location)), yet it seems you stood aside and let ((name)) perish in ((location)), so your resume, on the surface seems spotty as well. … Help me de-conflict this, Mr. Butler. Give me a reason to trust you. I feel that we have a lot to offer each other, but the ramifications of getting this wrong would be … well … potentially catastrophic.

Gerry: Hah! Exactly like we expected you to be! You certainly have the Seraphic gifts for straight-forwardness. (he leans forward and becomes almost painfully, deadly serious with a weight they’ve rarely experienced before…if at all). Let’s get one thing straight without any conflict. Sterling is evil. Yes, he’s testing and, that’s his job. However, he delights in bringing people to their vices. Look at him! Fat, gorging constantly, smoking, drinking, drugs, over indulgence of all vice you can name. THAT’s his game and he pushes it on all weak willed people he can. He’s vile and delights in watching folks fail into torment and pain. He loves to watch lives being ruined to never stand up again from their ashes. Oh, yes, he’s a bad one.
But you asked a fair question. Why’d we’d help one girl and not another. I vaguely remember what you are talking about but not in any details. It’s probably because of your activities why I can’t really remember the details. Therefore, I’ll talk about poor Sharon Edwards and our in-action. We can agree that a warrior’s first goal is to stay alive and continue the fight. Your General Patton said “No one ever won a war dying for their country.” It’s that simple. I don’t believe we can destroy Sterling–at least not alone and not without undue attention on the situation. It’s part of the rules, we stay in the shadows influencing and supporting, but not bringing things into the open. If we could have saved her, we would have. I regret that. I regret a great deal many things. That’s what makes me different than Sterling, no? He has no regrets; no conscience. I do.
(He pauses)

Well, that was a long answer wasn’t it? Can I give you a reason to trust me? No. not really. You need to make your own choices. However, i give you that choice. Sterling won’t.

Frank thinks for a while, staring at Butler using his best intimidating, prison ground stare (which doubtless has no effect whatsoever). Finally he nods.

Frank: Well, at least you’re speaking to us. We’ve met Sterling twice and he never gave us that chance. He chose instead to pummel us into unconsciousness in less time than it takes to tell. … … … I think I’ll trust you, Mr. Butler, especially as we both seem to be after the same thing. If we continue working as we are now, we’re going to start getting each other’s way. A lot. So it makes sense for us to work together, which means we need to be better acquainted. You define yourself as a warrior. Can you elaborate on that for me?

Butler: I won’t elaborate very far. It’s far too complicated, you’re not really interested, and it’s not really germane. Each of us has our place in the world. Ours is to fight for good, as in with Sword and so forth. Ours is not to decide where and when to fight, but respond when needed. This area is ours to look after and keep clean of filth. You are focusing on the wrong aspects, however. You need to focus on what you need. Bill, there, said he needed information from me to properly deal with Sterling. I’m intrigued. What is it you need?

Frank: Actually, you’re quite wrong. I am in fact quite interested as I find your skill set to be completely germane to our situation, especially if we’re to be working together. I already know you’ve got exceptional stealth skills, and I don’t question your courage, but I haven’t had the opportunity to observe much more. I’d like to know exactly what it is you can do. For the moment, *that* is what I need. That and other information, of course. For starters, how did you manage to take down Sterling – or rather, his … what did you call it … vessel? We’ve had several opportunities, but none has worked out very well for us.

Butler: We didn’t, as you call it, “take Sterling down” not really. I’m not sure we can. When I say warrior, you might have the wrong idea. We’re more like Recon, if you’re familiar with the term. Others of our ilk are more sword oriented. Of, we have skills to get our of trouble, don’t get the wrong idea. Sterling was occupied. All it really took was a call to the police, who showed up admirably quick. Connections will do that you know! Sterling had a choice. He could have fought…and probably won his way to freedom. But his is not a path of chivalry and fair fights. Rather, it’s one of preying from the shadows. It was simpler for him to drop his vessel and take on a new one. How do I know? Well, I can feel when he did it. Unfortunately, I don’t know in what form he left. When I felt that happened, I left. However, I kept myself watching the house in case I could make him. I didn’t and I don’t think he could tell I was there. Sterling’s gone. He hasn’t gone back to his apartment. As I watched the police line, I went to the house to watch it. He never came back. I suspect he’s forming a new persona…a new Pagan. It’s worked out well for him. So I’ll watch and wait.

Frank stares again: It sounds to me as if you’re saying that Sterling isn’t Sterling at all. That he’s … a demon … that inhabits other bodies. Is that what you mean by a “vessel”? Also, that he is – you think – basically indestructible? … Hm. If that’s the case, it sounds like the best we can do is fight … what’s the correct term, Bill – “delaying actions”? [Bill acknowledges the correct use of the term.] And what’s more, if we do eliminate his vessel, he’ll reappear in a new one – one we don’t recognize. … Does such a move hurt him at all? If not, we’re probably better off not eliminating his vessel so at least we recognize him when he shows up.

Butler: He can be killed, but it’s unlikely you can kill. You are correct, it’s better for all if he remains in the same vessel. A vessel’s like a body, but different. Think of it like this. Some beings possess people and control their bodies or minds. The possessed might still be aware, in a tiny way, that they’re being possessed. They may simply lose track of time. That’s not what Sterling is doing. Sterling is “creating” a body that looks and behaves like a normal body but is devoid of any humanity. It’s like his physical manifestation in this world. It has no existence on it’s own. What’s important is killing a vessel doesn’t kill him or her, by the way. A vessel’s gender and the demons gender don’t have to match! Losing a vessel is extremely … disturbing … and something he won’t like. It will piss him off. He’ll be more pissed that he’ll have to spend more time fitting into society and therefore will lose time corrupting people. That may get him in trouble with his superiors. Best to keep him at arm’s length. In fact, you shouldn’t waste time following him either. You’re not that good and he’s likely to lead you to where he wants you–he has control. Never voluntarily give a demon control

Frank: Ok, so we can’t kill him. Just as well. We have already adopted a more or less non-lethal approach to our actions. It sounds like we need to concentrate more on Sterling’s victims rather than Sterling himself. We’ll just try to give Sterling a wide berth. … I think we should wrap this up for now, but we’ll be in touch again. … Team, anyone have any questions or comments before we call it a night?

Jessica: Anything to keep him at bay? Garlic? A cross?

Butler: No, although prayer will alert an angel in the area to come look around. The more the belief the more powerful the call.]

Liuhua: You’ve stated that Bill’s a Bodyguard and Frank’s the Searaph…whatever that means. What do you mean by these and what are the rest of us.

Butler: Great question, but not a conversation for here. Perhaps, we go for a walk and discuss this in a park somewhere.

Art: How do we mark this guy’s people or him?

Butler: That is exceedingly difficult. I can help, from time to time. You’ll be able to figure out some things for yourselves. There is no outwardly way for you to know. Later, as you get more skilled you’re perception will be better. {Dr. Yaqub}, here will be the most help.

Butler leads the group out of the restaurant to a park. He then take each person alone (but in sight of the others to talk to privately). Each he tells something different and leads them through several mental exercises. In total, the time in the park takes 4 hours, so it is well after midnight by the time they are done.

Butler Interview 1

Bill: Hello. My name is Pattrick Stewart. I don’t have an appointment and I have not worked with Mr. Butler. I would like to purchase some information. Any file with Phillip Sterling would be handsomely rewarded.

Peggy: Sterling? What’s your interest in that case?

Bill: My interest is this. ($500 is placed on the table) That is for you; regardless if you get it for me or not. Your willingness and expedience will determine how much more is on the way

Peggy: Well, OK. but … (She turns toward the door in the back) Um ….. Gerry …. Can you … uh … come out here!

Bill (SV): really?! that didn’t work right off the bat?

Frank (sv): Sounds like it’s working to me. Hang in there.

Bill hears him walking toward the door, and sure enough, the door is opened by Gerry. As always, he’s wearing his hat, a red shirt, and jeans.

Gerry: Yes.

Bill: Yes. I am Patrick Stewart. I’d like every piece of information on Phillip Sterling possible. If there is information that you have not included in the files, I’d like that to.

Gerry: Let’s talk in here. Peggy, no visitors.

Bill: Wonderful. It was a pleasure Peggy

Bill follows Butler

Gerry: OH, Peggy, please turn on you radio.

Frank (sv): Bill, leave YOUR radio off, please.

Gerry heads back into his office and turns on a radio by the window of his office. He takes a seat and points toward the couch.

Gerry: Let’s start by you telling me where I know you from.

Bill coughs loudly while enabling his sub vocals

US, while Butler talks, Frank will do his best to determine whether he’s lying at any point. It’ll be harder over the airwaves, but he’ll do his best. We’ll also record this conversation for later analysis.

Bill: I’m not certain. I’ve not seen you before

Gerry: You’re not a very good liar.

Bill: Or someone who can’t tell the truth without looking like he’s lieing.

Gerry: I believe you came here for information. Lieing to start out the conversation’s not a good way to do it. Unless, I’m mistaken you’re not from around here and only arrived in town about half an hour ago. Now, where do I know you from?

Frank (sv): Bill, consider admitting you work for me. Unless I very much miss my guess, he’ll remember my name. Maybe he saw you with me.

Bill: Perhaps, in another time line we were partners? (Bill shrugs)

Gerry leans back and think about it for a little bit of time. “Perhaps that makes sense, but why?

Bill: Why does that make sense? Or why were we partners? I’ll assume the second. We were partners because we had a common goal. Phillip Sterling is a dangerous man. He is more than what he seems. I’d like some of your insight. Perhaps, you could even persuade me to give mine back…in another time line of course.

Gerry: He is that. So, let me ask you, what do you think he is? A murderer? A drug dealer? A Pagan’s pagan?

Bill: HA! He is, at the very least, all of the above. I will reserve my judgment until I have more information to act on. I will tell you that there are those that believe he is necessary. And because he has earned that distinction he must be closely studied.

Gerry: So you believe he’s more than he seems, but you don’t know how you mean that? Come on. Tell me (his voice rings with authority), what do *you* think he is.

Frank (sv): You could try saying that he’s singlehandedly working to bring about the end to everything we know, and not be lying at all.

Bill thinks for a moment.

Bill: Why is that so important to you?…never mind. He is the worst kind of person with the ability to harm others. One that he uses far too often for my liking

Bill: For things that don’t seem to really benefit him I might add.

Gerry chuckles: Fair enough. I will tell you that his benefit is not really in his interests. However, you came to me for “all the information about Phillip Sterling that I have”, right? Well then, why do you need it. He’s gone. I doubt we’ll see in the Tri-state area any more.

Bill: That is most fortunate for those in the tristate area. However, I am not at liberty to discuss why I need those files. I am at liberty to discuss payment of those files and any other information that you might have…excluded

Gerry: Well, then we seem to be at an impasse. You see I don’t need your money. However, your interest in a Sterling is … unusual. Your origins are not from this time. This makes you, I think, an uninformed visitor to a game that you shouldn’t be in. If we met and worked together you seem to have been successful. I suspect you’re working with Frank. Subterfuge is really not your best suit.

Frank (sv): Please pass on my regards to Mr. Butler.

Bill: That is why I went with the truth. How do you know I only arrived here a half an hour ago?

Gerry: I felt it.

Bill breaks his poker face and looks at Gerry.

Bill: You…felt it? Felt what?

Gerry: Hard to explain. You’re not of this time so you make waves. Discord. What’s interesting to me is that you came here, now, to talk to me about Sterling. Perhaps you’re trying to stop his Murder, Inc. streak from starting. You obviously don’t know who you’re dealing with.

Frank (sv): Well, that’s why we’re here!

Bill thinks for a second.

Bill: Alright…can you blame me?

Gerry: Perhaps. Let’s be a might more specific with what it is you want to know about Sterling?

Frank (sv): Let’s start with who he is precisely and why Mr. Butler doesn’t think he’ll be returning – which, by the way, we know is not true, but we can save that little tidbit for later.

Bill: Who is he really and why don’t you think he’ll be returning?

Gerry: Well, to explain one will most likely lead to the other. I think he dropped his vessel. He’ll leave for a while and come back. As to who he is. His name is not Phillip Sterling. Sterling most likely died in Canada under gruesome circumstances. I suspect he’ll hide out for a year or two.

Bill: And while we’re on the subject of who people are…who might you be Mr. Butler?

Gerry chuckles. Took you a long time to get to that didn’t it!

Bill: ha-ha…well I didn’t want it to be out of turn

Gerry: I’m your friend and can help you, but there are limits.

Bill: I’m glad to know that…but ya still haven’t answered my question have you? Perhaps it would help me understand a bit more if you could tell me how you know I wasn’t from this time. I know you felt it…but that doesn’t seem to e a trait common with other people of this time line.

Gerry: Why, you told me you weren’t. I don’t know that at all. However, it does make sense. Your human. I know … let’s try this ….

Gerry: I want you to think about Frank. Very very hard. Visualize where he is.

Frank (sv): I got a dollar that says he says he’s an angel.

Bill: I’m human? That implies that you are not. Care to explain that?

Gerry: Not until you do what I asked.

Frank (sv): Any takers? Anyone?

Bill (SV): Do ya mind Frank? Might I?

Frank (sv): Do it.

Art (sv): or he’s nuts.

Frank (sv): One doesn’t preclude the other, of course.

Bill reluctantly…goes along

Bill does and nothing mystical happens.

Bill: Alright…something’s supposed to happen? You’re supposed to tell me something?

Gerry: relax yourself and give it time. Try it again.

Bill agrees

Gerry sighs and says: Well, maybe you’re not ready yet.

Gerry: You’re a protector. A bodyguard.? I’m a warrior. We’ve each been given different gifts.

Frank (sv): A warrior would explain why he was shot a dozen times or more and is still up and walking around without apparent injury.

Bill: A warrior…well that makes a lot of sense to me.

Gerry: Oh?

Bill: Yes. Let’s say in that different time line, we got a long pretty well. You probably weren’t fooled then either but you made it look good.

Gerry: It’s my job to blend in. Now . let’s get back to what information you want about Sterling.

Bill: How much of what you put in that file is really true? Is there any point in my obtaining it?

Gerry: Which file?

Bill: Have you made a file on Phillip Sterling?

Frank (sv): Private files. We don’t care much what’s in the public ones.

Bill: Perhaps something that you wouldn’t have shared with Peggy?

Gerry: No. I only keep files for accounting purposes. People like to see things like receipts, dates, places, notes, etc. I have no client, therefore, there’s no reason to have a file.

Frank (sv): Let’s get straight to the point then. What can he tell us about what’s really going on? The REAL story, mind you, not what shows up in the papers.

Bill: Ok… please start one. I’d pay for it but you already said that you have no need for my money. I’ll be around to pick it up occasionally.

Gerry sighs: OK, but it’ll be an empty file… for a while anyway.

Frank (sv): Uh, Bill? How about we get some actual information. I don’t give a shit about files. It’s the information I’d like.

Bill: How did you know that he won’t be in the tristate area? What’s he up to? And what is he really up to? What he wants people to believe and otherwise

Gerry: Well, I already answered the first one. He’s dropped his vessel.

Bill (SV): come on…it was a barging! It’s a free file!

Frank (sv): Yeah, and you get what you pay for.

Gerry: What’s he up to? Good question. I think he’s up to violence and death. I think he’s up to getting others to commit violence and death.

Gerry: What does he want others to believe? I don’t think he cares what people think.

Frank (sv): How about why?

Bill: Dropped his vessel? Why is that so important to him? And before I get side tracked, why is he up to violence and death? Why get others to commit them?

Gerry: OK, first the vessel. Because his vessel’s the only way he can be here and interact with others. About why getting other to commit violence, because that’s the way the game is played.

Frank (sv): Bill, can you get him to drop the clever hints please? What the hell is going on? The full story, or as much of it as he’s willing to share.

Bill: Ok…is there a point at which you stop having me prompt you for questions and you just tell me everything about the vessel and how it links to him?

Gerry: yes … and no. There are some things I cannot explain. That’s one of them. Suffice it to say he needs to be “in” his vessel. I suspect he left it and walked out as a cop, because he sure didn’t walk out as a Pagan. He’ll have to construct a new identity and start anew. I won … this round.

Frank (sv): What’s a vessel? What is Sterling?

Bill: So Sterling is a genie? He lives in a vessel and has can change shape? …or there’s more of that stuff you haven’t told me I’d assume. What is he?

Gerry: There’s a lot more I haven’t … and won’t tell you. He’s not a genie. A demon. He can’t change shape, but can assume a vessel. This one was once called Phillip Sterling. As I said before, Sterling’s most likely dead.

Bill: Would that vessel need to be in one location or can it move around? Would it involve black magic? Like say, circles?

Gerry: The vessel looks human in all detectable ways. But it’s not him. He’s different. Like I said, I won’t explain more on it. Black magic’s not necessary or magic circles. Anything you saw would be for a different purpose.

Bill: How long has the entity that is using Phillip Sterling been up to this sort of nonsense?

GB: Time for such as us is not really a relevant concept. We don’t really live inside of time. It’s more live we live in all times at the same time, yet in every moment we live in that moment.

Bill asks as a follow up question Bill will ask (though he doubts he’ll get an honest answer what abilities does Mr. Butler have

GB: Abilities? Not really. Humans have abilities. We are given gifts. Mine aren’t important now.

Frank (sv): I think we need to all meet as soon as possible. So far Mr. Butler’s given us no reason to believe he has anything other than our best interests in mind. There’s still a possibility that he’s playing us, but if so it will be good to keep him close at hand. … My immediate advice is that if he can tell when you’re lying, don’t lie. That doesn’t mean you have to tell him everything, of course.

Bill: mom…working WITH me? Well, I suppose we have the same goal don’t we? Perhaps we can work together for the moment.

GB: You really want to go after him alone? You think that’s wise?

Bill: um…no. I just said we can work together.

Bill (SV) :alright…do you want him to meet you all or what’s the next move?

GB: So … what, exactly is it we’re working on?

Frank (sv): Yes. Let’s set something up for tonight or tomorrow. We should have a strategy session before we jump in. Help us get our story straight if nothing else.

Bill: Well I suppose we’re going to have to stop Mr. Sterling. How about we discuss this a little later tonight. Are you available?

GB: Stop him from what? We don’t know what he’ll be doing or where he is.

Bill: Well…I might. All will be explained later…if you are available?

Gerry smiles and stands: Yes, right. Why don’t we meet a Tony’s at 8th and Cedar. Is 10:00 PM enough time for you and your team to discuss things.

Frank smiles (sv): Yes, that should be plenty of time.

Bill: Depends…what kind of place is Tony’s?

Frank (sv): Italian. Gotta be Italian.

Gerry: Why? Got a date you don’t want to show around? It’s a place we can talk.

Bill: Just kidding. 10 PM is fine.

Frank: Art, I need you to recon this Tony’s place. Make sure it’s legit. Take whoever you need. We’ll meet as a team when you’re done. How much time you figure you’ll need?

Bill (SV): Depends on how long a medium with pep takes. I volunteer

Art: No more than an hour.

Frank laughs: Fine. Stop for lunch. Make a date of it! Liuhua, we’ll need a room to meet in. Get a few, just in case we need to stay overnight. Take Jessica. Dr. Y and I will watch the building. See if Herr Butler makes an appearance.

Bill: Roger

Tony’s is a small .. guess what Italian restaurant with several large booths that are semi-private

When Frank is alone with Dr. Y, he’ll talk to her privately (not sv). Frank: Tazkira, level with me. What’s your take on this? Sterlling is a demon? So what’s that make Butler? An angel? Or is the other way around? Who do we trust here? Or is it all nonsense?

Dr Y: I think you’re first take is right. Sterling’s clearly not an angel. Butler? I don’t know. He certainly doesn’t seem like a demon and he does seem to be against Sterling. I wonder about Jessica’s comment about why Butler didn’t save that last woman. Maybe we ask him and see what he says.

Frank: Yes. I had forgotten that. Thanks for reminding me. I’ll definitely bring it up. If I don’t, please do it, or remind me. Your call. … I gotta say, my gut says to trust Butler, but my mind says that that’s just what a real demon would make me think. But then again, I’m new to this way of thinking. I’m going to be relying very heavily on you in the near future, I think.

Dr Y: Hah! Like I know what to make of all this? You want I test him with my metaphysical knowledge of the other side?

Frank smiles: Nothing so forward, no. What I mean to say is that you have a theoretical knowledge about this sort of thing that I lack. More resources to draw upon, if not the actual experience. Except for a psychologically distressed mother who felt that guilt was the root of all religious experiences, I didn’t grow up with much in the way of religious eduction.

Dr Y: I will definitely back you up on that one.

*** Time moves on ***

Bill will bring back pizza

Team meeting: After Art sweeps the room for bugs (yeah, right!), Frank sums up the conversation Bill had with Butler, just to recap. He then asks for people’s off the cuff opinion.

Art thinks Gerry’s smoked one too many

Jessica’s skeptical

Dr Y., having felt the blow from Tituba, is supportive

Liuhua’s confused but open

Bill thinks after geting beat twice by the same guy doing things that are just bearly possible, he’s willing to believe it…but hes still holding out that its all rubbish

Frank thanks them all for their honesty. Their positions are clear. He lets them know that he himself, like Jessica, is skeptical, but is also, like Liuhua, open to the possibility. He doesn’t say this to convince anyone – just so they know where he stands. He also tells them that his plan for the evening meeting is to confront Butler with some of the facts they know and the fact that they are having trouble buying his story (not necessarily in that order). He’d like to see if Butler can/will offer anything in the way of proof.

Frank: Ok, next order of business. Art, this may be a set-up. I doubt it, but I don’t want to go in unprepared in case it is. I want you thinking about ways to keep us safe. Be creative.

Art: Best way to beat this is change venue’s at the last minute

Handguns authorized. Frank will opt for a light handgun (model TBD upon arrival). Our destination is Philadelphia (Butler’s office) on 30 May 1977. Since Butler knows Frank, Bill will be the point man on this one. He can feel free to use any information about Sterling that we know to be true. His goal is to find out what Butler knows, suspects, or has heard rumored about Sterling (though obviously he shouldn’t discuss time travel or the Tau or anything like that). Basically anything we can use against him to take him out of the game.

Dr. Y. 0.22

Frank: Let’s look for a place to make that happen. Who hasn’t Butler see yet? Liuhua and Dr. Y, I think. … You’ll meet him outside Tony’s. Inform him of our new location. Art, your job is to find a new place for the meeting. Jessica, you’re with Art. Bill, you and I are going shopping. I’l need your “wish list” of handguns, if you’re so inclined. However, and I can’t stress this enough, they are ONLY for self defense. Clear?

Art: 0.38 and a 0.22 Ruger

At the gun shop, Frank will opt for a 0.38 Beretta with a large clip.

Liuhua’s not comfortable going armed

It’s 10:15 and Gerry arrives at the new place …. an oriental restaurant with a semi-private room

Gerry sits and commends you for changing venues

After we get served, Frank slips the waitress $20 and tells her that we don’t want to be disturbed until further notice.

Frank: Thank you. … Frank Giordano. I assume you remember me?

Frank: Allow me to introduce the rest of the team. Bill you know. [He then introduces everyone else.]

Decisions, Decisions

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ
30 April 1977, 12:35pm

Sterling stayed at 1056 S Clinton Ave until 3:15, when Art reported he went back to his house. Jessica reported at 8:58 he headed to the Suffolk Bar. At 11:00 he was still at the bar. From there he went to a party in a local park.

Bill was able to confirm Dr. Robard did indeed go to the Jazz Night Club, located at 781 Centre St. He stayed there until 10:05 when he left a woman and drove to her place. He was there until 1:35. From there he went home. At 9:30, he left his apartment and picked her up. They went out to eat and at 11:00 Bill woke me up to tell me, Robard was leaving town on I-195 E. Bill followed Robard with Dr. Yaqub and myself following. They had a nice day at the beach. We didn’t. Robard and the woman returned 7pm. Robard dropped her off and headed back home. Then, something odd happened. He headed out to Benny’s Bar. A decidedly odd place for him to frequent. ABout 9:30 he headed back out and picked up the woman. They headed slightly out of town to a fellow psychiatrists house. While he was dining, Art checked out the woman’s place and eliminated her from any suspicion. Without any good way to watch the new house, Bill headed to a high school to watch the road for them passing. I decided it would be useful to check out Robard’s apartment and see what I can find. I will be doing that in the next hour or so.

Investigations Continue

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ
29 April 1977, 7:30pm

The last week wasn’t very productive. We had false starts and rabbit holes, but nothing concrete. As the τ event approaches, I need a better plan. We started looking into Robard’s past, but with the amount of time we have available and the immature tools available to us in this time, we really didn’t make good progress. We talked to a lot of his college classmates and found nothing out of the ordinary.

On Thursday, I noticed Robard was jittery and fairly nervous. On looking back, his accident proneness was worse today than normal. Thinking it was related to something weighing on his mind, I asked him outright if anything is wrong. He replied that he had too much coffee. He also thought he needs to rest. He’ll leave early and be better. Though, I detected to lying, I decided to follow him. I switched the watchers from Sterling’s place to Robard. I also asked whether he’d like some company. Driving jittery can be dangerous, and shared company may help settle his nerves. He wasn’t having any of that, but he did allow me to follow him to ensure he was okay. I was able to convince him, however to have supper with me. Unfortunately, nothing was gleaned from this. He was back to his normal self during dinner–less nervous and jittery–still as clutzy though. He drops his fork steps on a passerby’s foot during the dinner (which is excellent and not real pricey). I was generous, buying both bottles of wine and actually had a good time. I assumed, therefore, that whatever’s making him nervous is office-related and vowed to watch him more closely on Friday.

Friday brought with it Sterling’s return. He came back around 4:30am. The apartment was quiet while Sterling was in it (until 11:30) then he heads out. Art mentioned this is sort of odd. People normally makes noises that the mikes pick up. Making dinner, calling people on the phone, watching TV, etc. However, Sterling made almost no noise for the entire time. When he left, he went to a dive called Benny’s and then went to the Suffolk. He’s still there.

Today, I let the name “Phillip Sterling” slip into his conversation at one point to see if Robard reacted to it in any way. He didn’t. I’m fairly confident he doesn’t know the name. Since today is Friday, I asked him about his plans for the weekend. He is going to hit a nightclub in Trenton tonight. However, it’s a black nightclub and I’d definitely be out of place and probably have issues.

Strange Meanings with Time Running Out

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ
25 April 1977, 7:30am

It has been a long, tiring weekend. We searched and searched for a meaning the inlay in Sterling’s house to no avail. Sterling, himself, has not been seen from since the weekend. Perhaps, he will show tonight. I am more and more certain we are dealing with some form of black magic and the occult. I just don’t know how or why. Each after their own, my team researched the symbols we found. Liuhua through the libraries of the Universities; Dr. Yaqub through the religious centers; myself through the psychics, palm readers, etc. that this time period brought out in large numbers. Most, were as I suspected, nothing but cranks and charlatans. A few, however, brought about interesting results. One gave up after confessing she  could see no past of mine, nor any future–only the present. Though she believed she failed, I believe she was seeing quite accurately. In this timeline, I don’t have a past or a future. One pointed out that I am covered in “red”, both for ill and for good. Red is a color to watch out for and a color that saves. Certainly, Sterling’s red hair fits. Perhaps I’m seeing more into it though. I cannot fathom the red for good part. The most striking result, however, was from an old half-blind Latino woman who refused to speak to me until she read my cards. After laying down the cards, she remarked that my present situation is influenced by a large number of people. The situation’s about people, will be resolved through people, and ultimately will affect the people in the situation. She described it as a play set on the stage of life. The plot of the play was challenge about inner turmoil and a decision leading to regret and sadness. A player behind the scenes that’s not entirely what he seems to be. A distant past shrouded in secrecy and a recent one of boldness, creativity, and new beginnings. A mentor would come out of the scene. The man would come from another city, a man with which I have connections. She described an outcome in flux, but one that would, or could, end in extreme violence for violence’s sake. I must confess I was shaken by her reading. She believes the central powers within this play focus on the Mentor and the King of Cups, the pretender and man who isn’t what he claims to be. I will think about this for a little longer before telling the rest of the group.

Bikers have strange houses

In the pale moonlight, Art walks down Rutherford Avenue looking carefully for any awake. Finding none, he heads to Sterling’s back door. He carefully steps onto the back porch and sets to task. He’s encouraged when the first pin slips into place. After ten minutes, he’s not so encouraged. It takes him a full fourty-five minutes to open the lock. He finds the expected kitchen and kitchen phone. Digging I to his bag, he quickly opens the unit and places the first bug. After the kitchen comes the dining room, and then the sitting room and another phone.

Heading up stairs, he finds a small front bedroom and a back bedroom. What surprises him, is that the door itself is locked. “Why,” he wonders, “would you lock your own bedroom door?” Like the one downstairs, this lock is also a top quality lock and it takes him another forty-five minutes to unlock this door. When he does, he’s shocked. First, the room has no furniture, second the carpet has been removed and an inscription had been carved into the wood. The grooves are about a quarter inch wide and show evidence of red sand in them. In small circles of inlay are unlit, but previously burned candles. Art decides not to enter the room and cal Frank immediately.

Phillip Sterling lives at 655 Rutherford Ave Trenton, NJ. Unfortunantly, it’s a residential neighborhood without any really good locations for observation.

The investigation starts

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ,
22 April 1977

Today is Friday–the beginning of the weekend. I pressed Dr. Robard about what his plans were this weekend and was slightly surprised by the answer. Tonight he’s seeing Annie Hall. He missed the Premeire on Wednesday. On Saturday, he’ll head to the beach, he thinks, and hit a night club he knows in Barnegat Bay.

Art’s night time activities were a resounding success. Learning from his mistake the prior night, he slipped into Robard’s office in no time flat. Within 10 minutes he was in, swapped the phones, locked the door, and returned to his guard post.

Bill had the most activity of the group. Sterling left his apartment early, around 11:00. Bill followed him to a diner, where Sterling had lunch. Then Sterling left town. Bill turned off, not wanting to be out of vocal range or too far from support should things turn bad (By the end of Art’s shift watching the house, Sterling had not arrived back yet.) He wasn’t happy. His day turned around, however. While back at Clinton House he watched a group watching TV together. After the show was over, they all headed out for supper together. He had noticed many of the same people together the day prior. I believe it’s the first group we’ve identified. At the center of the group appeared to be Rafael Marchall, John Lange, and John LeBlanc. With them were Frank Giambrone, Karl Courtney, and Ernesto Barristeo. Though interesting, the only one of the four horseman involved is John Lange. I’m not certain there is much value with this information.

First Day of Work at Clinton House

Case File: 004
Trenton, NJ
21 April 1977

I thought I had closed the door on counseling prisoners, or residents as they’re called here. I had also forgotten how tiring a State counseling job can be. Probably, the most frustrating thing here, however, is the bad practice. I have to keep reminding myself it’s 1977 and the field of Criminal Psychology is new. Clinton House is still an experiment. Not at all the type of place I attended in the early 2020′s. After the tour, yesterday, I knew the layout of the place and had a good idea of how the day would run. I decided to arrive early to impress my new found supervisor. We arrive at 7:55 and found the good Dr. Robards had been to work almost an hour before I got there. As soon as I arrived, I was whisked into meetings, file review sessions, phone calls to employers, and advice sessions with the social workers. By the time 1:00 had rolled down, I had a list of 10 action items and Dr. Robards had a list of 20. I tried to get him to lunch, but he stated he was eating in. He almost always ate at his desk reviewing files. Having not brought a lunch, I offered to go and get him something. He accepted that. I also sprung for lunch for Pauline. Hopefully this will help.

As soon as I left the house, I realized I had yet to ask him any of the questions I needed to. Suddenly, the reason I was here was swimming in my head. Cursing, I admonished myself to ask him this afternoon. Then I remembered the afternoon’s sessions. 2:00 would bring interview sessions with Elizabeth Tricomi, who isn’t aware of his status. At 3:00, he has a practice interview with Luis Rivera and then a debrief of how he did. That should complete around 4:00. Then Dr. Robard interviews him. Ending at 4:45, Bill can go back to the main part of the house, while Dr. Robard jots down his notes. By then it’s 5:00 and my day is officially over. That would leave from 1:30-2:00 to get in any questions, until after 5:00.

Sure enough that’s what happened. By the time the Doctor left it was a little after 6:30pm and I found out precious little information. I did find out the following however:

  • Doctor Robard is single and doesn’t have a girl friend
  • He’s a big movie buff
  • A strict Southern Baptist

On other fronts, we set up a rotating schedule watching Phillip Sterling’s house. Our first hit occurred around 5pm when Liuhua followed him to the Suffolk Bar in Downtown Trenton. The long row of bikes on the outside of it convinced her it wasn’t a good idea to go into the bar. She took a cup of tea in the cafe across the street for about 30 minutes before leaving to go back to the apartment. He returned during her next shift at 5am on the 22nd.

Arthur was able to pick Dr. Robard’s lock, but it was trickier than he thought and took him almost twenty minutes to get in. He didn’t want to risk getting caught, so he quickly planted the office bug and left. Not a moment too soon, as well. He quickly ran to the bathroom, flushed and came out just as Paul was rounding the corner.

Bill was able to find out a little more about where the four horseman work, as we’ve come to call our four perpetrators:

  • Robert McNussen works at a from UPS Warehouse 10pm-6am
  • John Lange works as an overhead cranes mechanic at Patterson Construction from 9-5
  • Juan Delmora: Forklift operator Alloy Media & Marketing 9-5
  • Willis Stewart works for the State of New Jersey in the Plumbing Unit from 9-6
